Aoḋ Ó Néill : $b Drama

Aoḋ Ó Néill by Pádraig Ó Seaghdha is a historical drama written in the early 20th century. It portrays the Ulster chieftain Hugh O’Neill’s struggle with English power in Ireland and his forbidden love for Mabel Bagenal, unfolding amid political intrigue, ambushes, and rising war, and culminating in a resounding Irish victory.

The play opens with Mabel in Drogheda, where an English champion, Síográbh, plots to seize her as bait for O’Neill. At Dublin Castle, O’Neill spars verbally with the Lord Deputy and refuses to abase himself, then, warned by Mabel’s friend, sidesteps an ambush and meets Mabel in a cottage at Glasnevin, where they wed in secret despite her brother Bagenal’s rage. Back in Dungannon, O’Neill rejects demands to send his wife as hostage and to forsake his ally O’Donnell, musters Ulster, and fights through English traps. He kills Síográbh in single combat and, joined by O’Donnell and Maguire, routs the English in set battles that crest at Béal Átha Buidhe (the Yellow Ford). The drama closes with music and celebration as O’Neill’s banner is hailed in triumph.
